In Virginia City, we boast one of Northern Nevada's premier art centers, St. Mary's Art Center. They've recently hosted "Head & Toes," an engaging collaborative project involving local artists. In this event, one artist starts a painting by completing the top half of a canvas and then covers it. Another artist then finishes the bottom half without seeing the first artist's work. The final reveal is always a wonderful surprise! In 2023, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Comstock cult classic film, "God Monster of Indian Flats." As part of the commemoration, artists contributed to complete projects inspired by the film. These projects showcase the incredible talent and creativity within our community, celebrating both our local art scene and our unique cultural heritage.
The photos don't do justice to how beautiful these eight panels truly are. Sometimes with a vertical insert, over time gravity can cause a slight bowing to the panels. During the restoration, 7 panels were restabilized and 1 panel was completely rebuilt.
A truly beautiful design, as pure as the first Sierra snow. During the first shut down, I received the state project for the Veteran's Bluebird Chapel, this is at the Veteran Wellness Center in Reno.
Most of this year I have been working with distributors at half staff trying to get the materials here. It's been challenging with the pandemic. I'm building a 98 panel mural with a deadline in June. This piece represents the four directions of Nevada, with the entrance showing the bristlecone pine. I must say, living in and out of different hospitals and rehab centers with my parents for the last 15 years, I have never seen such amazing accommodations for vets and long care facilities as I see with the veterans wellness center here in Reno. Beautifully done and well deserved. What a great project! St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City and the Core Contemporary Gallery in Las Vegas came together to host a unique art event through The Nevada Art Council's Basin to Range Exchange program called NVHead2Toe.
Fifteen artists from Northern Nevada and fifteen artists from the Las Vegas area were paired to produce collaborative artworks. The catch was that neither artist could see the other's work. We were given half of a canvas to work with and some match lines to meet. One artist was to do the "head" and the other to do the "toes". I was very happy to be selected to participate in such a unique idea. The curiosity about what lay below the cover on the other side of the canvas was intense. What colors? What subject matter? The finished product is sure to be a juxtaposition of spontaneous imagery. How could the entire piece not explode with artistic tension and contrast? The finished products will be shown at the St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City from Friday, December 13 to Sunday, December 15. Then the pieces are moved to Core Contemporary Gallery in Las Vegas and shown from January 23 to February 29, with a reception on Saturday January 25. For more information in Northern Nevada visit www.stmarysartcenter.org. They are at 555 R Street in Virginia City. In Southern Nevada see www.corecontemporary.com. And here is a photo of the entire piece [HEAD and TOES.jpeg] "With credit to Kim Johnson from Las Vegas on the 'head'" Wired in has been traveling around the Carson Valley meeting new friends..
