How to Preserve your Stained Glass Windows.

Even though they originated as early as the 17th century, stained glass windows remain to be quite exquisite in today’s modern world. Stained glass can refer to either painted, colored, and enameled glass.  It can also be made of what is called true glass stains.

Like any décor pieces, stained glass (also called art glass) is not immune to wear and tear caused by time and natural elements.  If you wish to prolong the life of your stained glass windows, it is important that you conduct proper maintenance to these pieces.

Here are just some of the tips for properly maintaining stained windows:

  1. Inspect your windows regularly. Check for breaks, cracks and other damages. Early detection can prevent further damage.    Pay particular attention to any damage on the glazing. Glazing refers to the compound that glues lead and glass together; it is responsible for keeping stained window air and water tight.  If you notice that the glazing is starting to deteriorate, apply a fresh one in the areas affected. Before applying the fresh glazing, make sure to clear the areas of dirt and particles.
  2. You may use paper towel or soft cloth to clean the glass and remove any dust and other residue. If you want a more thorough cleaning, use Windex or PH neutral solution mixed with distilled water. Stained windows, especially those that are hand-painted, are sensitive to acidic solutions that many cleaning agents have.
  3. Do not use high-pressure water to clean your stained window or art glass.  The pressure can cause hairline cracks on the delicate surface.
  4. If you see a damage or a crack and unsure on what to do, it is better to hire a professional to take apart the stained glass window and restore it.
Many artists consider stained glass windows as art pieces themselves. Their presence does not only give more character to a certain space but they also add up the value of a property. You must expect to use time and money to maintain your stained glass windows, but they are time and money well-spent.
